Call me is a well-established mobile service provider in Denmark that operates as a sub-brand of Telia. For many expats and international residents, choosing a provider like Call me offers a balance between competitive pricing and reliable network coverage. Understanding how mobile plans in Denmark work is essential for newcomers, as the system relies heavily on digital identification and residency status. This guide details everything you need to know about the Call me mobile network, subscription requirements, and alternative options for those who have just arrived.

Call Me: Mobile Networks

Denmark has excellent mobile infrastructure with high-speed data available across the country. The market is built around three main network operators that own the physical cell towers and infrastructure. These three major players are TDC NET, 3 (Tre), and the joint network operated by Telia and Telenor.

Smaller providers, known as Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), rent access to these networks. Call me is an MVNO that operates on the Telia/Telenor network. This specific network is often referred to as the TT-Network. It is a shared infrastructure project that combines the radio towers of both Telia and Telenor to maximize coverage.

By choosing a provider like Call me, you gain access to this extensive infrastructure without necessarily paying the premium prices associated with the main Telia brand. The coverage is identical to what you would receive as a direct Telia customer. This includes access to 4G and 5G signals throughout Denmark.

Requirements for a Mobile Subscription

Signing up for a mobile contract in Denmark is different from many other countries. It is not simply a matter of walking into a shop with a passport. The system is integrated with the Danish civil registration system. To take out a postpaid subscription with Call me mobile, you must meet specific criteria.

The CPR Number

The most critical requirement is a CPR number (Civil Registration Number). This is the personal identification number issued to all residents in Denmark. You cannot sign a standard mobile contract without one. The telecom provider uses this number to perform a credit check and register your address.

Danish Address

Your address must be registered in the Danish National Register (Folkeregistret). When you enter your CPR number during the signup process, the system automatically pulls your official address. You generally cannot have a SIM card sent to a temporary address or a hotel if you are signing up for a subscription.

MitID or NemID

Digital identification is required to sign the contract online. MitID (the successor to NemID) is the secure login system used for banking, government sites, and signing binding agreements. You will need an active MitID to complete the purchase of a Call me subscription online. This acts as your digital signature.

Options for Expats Without a CPR Number

Many foreigners arrive in Denmark and need phone service immediately, weeks before they receive their CPR number or MitID. In this scenario, you cannot subscribe to Call me or similar monthly plans right away. You must rely on prepaid options.

Prepaid cards do not require a credit check or a CPR number. You can purchase these at convenience stores, kiosks (like 7-Eleven), or supermarkets. The most common providers for this initial phase are Lebara and Lyca Mobile. These allow you to have a Danish phone number and data connection immediately upon arrival.

Once your residency paperwork is processed and you have obtained your MitID, you can switch from a prepaid SIM card Denmark to a subscription plan with Call me. You can usually port (transfer) your temporary prepaid number to your new subscription so you do not have to change your contact details again.

Mobile Plans and Pricing Overview

Danish mobile plans are generally very affordable compared to other European countries and North America. Most plans include a set amount of data for use within Denmark and a specific allowance for roaming within the EU. Unlimited talk and SMS are standard in almost all packages.

Plan TypeData (Denmark)EU Roaming DataPrice Range (Monthly)
Prepaid (No CPR)10 GB – 200 GB2 GB – 10 GB49 – 149 DKK
Basic Subscription20 GB – 50 GB10 GB – 20 GB89 – 119 DKK
Large Subscription100 GB – 200 GB20 GB – 30 GB129 – 159 DKK
Unlimited DataUnlimited25 GB – 40 GB179 – 229 DKK

The value for money in Denmark is high. Competition between the three main networks keeps prices low. It is rare to pay extra for domestic voice calls or SMS. The main differentiator between price points is the data allowance. Most users find that mid-tier plans offer more than enough data for daily usage, including streaming music and browsing social media.

When reviewing prices, pay close attention to introductory offers. Many companies, including Call me, offer a discounted price for the first two or three months. After this period, the price reverts to the standard monthly fee. There are rarely binding contracts for mobile plans in Denmark, meaning you can usually cancel with 30 days’ notice.

Call me

EU Roaming and Data Limits

Denmark participates in the European Union’s “Roam Like at Home” initiative. This means you can use your Danish mobile phone in other EU countries without paying exorbitant roaming charges. However, there are important limitations to understand regarding data usage.

While voice calls and SMS are typically unlimited within the EU just as they are in Denmark, data is capped. If you have a plan with 100 GB of data for use in Denmark, you will not get 100 GB to use in Germany or France. Instead, you will have a specific “EU Data” allowance, which is usually between 10 GB and 30 GB depending on the price of your plan.

Call me clearly states the EU data limit on their plan descriptions. If you exceed this limit while traveling, you will be charged a surcharge per megabyte. It is advisable to check your specific allowance in the Call me app before traveling. For travel outside the EU (such as to the UK, USA, or Switzerland), roaming prices are significantly higher and are not included in standard packages.

Physical SIM vs. eSIM

The traditional physical SIM card is still widely used in Denmark. When you sign up for a subscription, the provider will mail a SIM card to your registered Danish address. This usually takes 2 to 4 business days. The envelope will contain a 3-in-1 card that fits standard, micro, and nano SIM slots.

However, eSIM Denmark technology is rapidly becoming the standard. An eSIM is a digital SIM profile that you download to your phone. It eliminates the need for a physical plastic card. Call me supports eSIM technology for their subscribers. This is particularly useful if you have a phone that supports dual SIMs, allowing you to keep your home country’s number active alongside your new Danish number.

To use an eSIM with Call me, you typically select this option during the checkout process or request a swap in their self-service portal. You will receive a QR code via email or in your user account. Scanning this code with your phone adds the network profile. This process is instant, meaning you do not have to wait for the post to arrive.

Network Coverage and Quality

Denmark is a flat country with no mountains to block signals, which contributes to excellent coverage. The Telia/Telenor network used by Call me covers approximately 99% of the population. You can expect strong 4G signals in all cities, towns, and most rural areas. Dead zones are rare and usually confined to deep forests or highly isolated coastal areas.

The rollout of 5G in Denmark is well advanced. Call me offers 5G access on most of their newer plans. To utilize 5G, you must have a 5G-compatible smartphone and be within range of a 5G tower. Major cities like Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, and Aalborg have extensive 5G coverage. The network switches seamlessly between 5G and 4G depending on signal strength.

Managing Your Subscription

Once you are a customer, managing your mobile plan is done primarily online. Danish companies prioritize digital self-service. Call me provides a user-friendly website and app where you can track your usage, view bills, and change plans.

Payment Methods

In Denmark, bills are rarely paid by manual bank transfer each month. The standard method is “Betalingsservice” (automatic payment service) or registering a payment card (Dankort, Visa, or Mastercard) for automatic recurring charges. When you sign up, you will be asked to register a card. Failure to pay on time can result in a blocked number and additional fees.

Changing Plans

Flexibility is a key feature of the Danish mobile market. If you find you need more data, you can upgrade your plan instantly through the self-service portal. If you want to downgrade to a cheaper plan, you can usually do so effective from the next billing cycle. There are no penalties for changing your plan type as long as you stay with the same provider.

Porting Your Phone Number

If you already have a Danish phone number (perhaps from a prepaid Lebara SIM you bought when you arrived), you can keep it when switching to Call me. This process is called “nummerflytning” (number porting).

During the signup process with Call me, you will be asked if you want to keep your current number. You must provide the number and the name of your current operator. You will also need the SIM card number (ICCID) in some cases. Call me will then contact your current provider to terminate that contract and move the number. Do not cancel your old subscription yourself; the new provider handles the transition to ensure you do not lose service.

Additional Services and Perks

Mobile providers in Denmark often bundle entertainment services to attract customers. Call me frequently includes access to streaming services or podcast apps as part of their higher-tier subscriptions. These offers change regularly, so it is worth checking the current campaigns.

Features like WiFi Calling and VoLTE (Voice over LTE) are standard on the network. WiFi Calling is particularly valuable for expats. It allows you to make and receive regular calls and SMS messages over a WiFi connection, even if the cellular signal is weak. This is helpful in highly insulated modern Danish buildings where indoor signal can sometimes be reduced.

Mobile Broadband Alternatives

For some expats, a mobile subscription is not just for a phone but also for home internet. If you do not have a fiber or coax connection in your apartment, you might consider mobile broadband Denmark solutions. Call me offers data-only SIM cards designed for 4G/5G routers.

These plans typically offer much higher data limits (often 1000 GB or truly unlimited) but do not include voice minutes. They are a flexible alternative to fixed-line internet, as you can take the router with you to a summer house or a friend’s place. However, for serious gaming or large households, a wired internet connection is generally more stable than a mobile broadband connection.

Customer Support and Language

Navigating telecom contracts in a foreign language can be daunting. Most major Danish telecom companies, including Call me, have self-service portals that are primarily in Danish. However, customer support agents generally speak excellent English.

If you encounter technical issues or billing questions, calling customer service is usually the most efficient way to get help in English. Email support is also available. While the contract terms and automated emails will likely be in Danish, translation tools in web browsers handle these effectively. The key terms to learn are “Data” (Data), “Tale” (Voice/Talk), “Abonnement” (Subscription), and “Opsigelse” (Cancellation).

Canceling Your Subscription

If you are leaving Denmark, you must cancel your subscription. The standard notice period is 30 days. You can cancel via the self-service login or by contacting customer support. It is crucial to do this before you close your Danish bank account and deregister your address, as you need to settle the final bill.

If you are simply switching to another Danish provider, you do not need to cancel manually. The new provider will handle the cancellation when they port your number. However, if you are moving abroad permanently, a manual cancellation is required to stop the recurring payments.
