Telmore is a well-known telecommunications brand in Denmark, operating as a subsidiary of Nuuday. While originally established as a mobile service provider, they have expanded significantly into the home broadband market. They utilize the TDC NET infrastructure, which is the most extensive physical network in the country. This allows internet from Telmore to reach the vast majority of Danish households through various connection technologies.

For an expat living in Denmark, Telmore represents a specific type of service provider. They position themselves as a premium digital brand rather than a discount utility. Their primary differentiator is the integration of entertainment services. They bundle internet access with streaming subscriptions such as Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max. This approach simplifies billing for newcomers who want both connectivity and entertainment in a single package.

Requirements for Signing Up with Telmore

Signing up for internet services in Denmark involves strict identity verification. The telecommunications industry is regulated to prevent fraud and ensure secure contracts. As a foreigner, you must meet specific criteria before you can open an account with Telmore.

CPR Number

You cannot sign up for a subscription with Telmore without a Danish CPR number (Civil Registration Number). This number is issued to residents upon registration with the municipality. It serves as your unique tax and social security identifier. Telmore uses this number to perform a credit check and to register the subscription legally to your identity. If you have just arrived and do not yet have your yellow health card (Sundhedskort), you must wait until this process is complete before ordering online.

MitID Verification

Denmark utilizes a digital signature system called MitID. This is a secure login app used for banking, government mail, and signing private contracts. When you order internet from Telmore online, you are required to sign the contract digitally using MitID. This validates your identity instantly. If you have a CPR number but have not yet activated MitID, you will likely face roadblocks ordering via the website. In some cases, calling customer support directly may allow for alternative identity verification, but this is becoming increasingly rare.

Payment Methods and Foreign Cards

Payment systems in Denmark rely heavily on “Betalingsservice” (automatic payment service) or card payments linked to a Danish bank account. Telmore generally accepts major credit cards like Visa and Mastercard. However, using a foreign credit card can be problematic. Recurring monthly charges on non-Danish cards are often flagged by foreign banks or fail due to 3D Secure requirements. It is highly recommended to open a Danish bank account as soon as possible. Once you have a Danish account, you can register your Telmore bills for automatic payment, ensuring you do not miss invoices.

Infrastructure and Network Coverage

Telmore does not own the physical cables in the ground. Instead, they rent access to the TDC NET infrastructure. TDC NET owns the majority of the copper, coax, and fiber lines in Denmark. Because Telmore uses this network, their coverage is nearly identical to other major providers like YouSee or Hiper. However, availability is strictly address-dependent.

The Address Check

You cannot simply choose a provider and assume they can service your apartment. Before offering you a plan, Telmore requires you to enter your specific address on their website. The system queries the national database to see what physical cables enter your building. If your building is only connected to a fiber network owned by a utility company that has not opened its network to Telmore, you cannot get service from them. This is common in certain parts of Jutland where regional energy companies own the fiber.

Apartment Buildings and HOAs

Many expats rent apartments in large complexes. In Denmark, these buildings often have an Owners’ Association (Ejerforening) or a Housing Association (Andelsforening). These associations may have bulk agreements with specific providers. If your building has an exclusive contract with a different provider, you may be blocked from choosing Telmore for fixed-line internet. Always check your lease agreement or ask your landlord if the internet is “free choice” or provided collectively.

Connection Types Available

Telmore offers internet through three primary technologies. The specific technology available to you depends entirely on the infrastructure installed at your residence.

Fiber Internet (FTTH)

Fiber-to-the-Home is the fastest and most reliable connection type. If your address supports fiber internet in Denmark, Telmore can typically deliver speeds up to 1,000 Mbps (1 Gigabit). Fiber connections are symmetrical, meaning the upload speed is the same as the download speed. This is ideal for video conferencing and large file transfers. Installation usually requires a fiber box (ONT) to be mounted on the wall inside your home.

Cable Broadband (Coax)

Coax delivers internet via the TV cable network. This is very common in Copenhagen and older apartment buildings. Modern coax connections generally offer high download speeds, often matching fiber at 1,000 Mbps. However, upload speeds are usually lower, typically capped around 100 Mbps or 500 Mbps depending on the local infrastructure. Coax is a stable technology but can occasionally suffer from congestion during peak usage hours in densely populated buildings.

DSL (Copper)

Traditional copper phone lines (DSL) are being phased out across Denmark. Telmore may still offer this in rural areas where no other wired option exists, but it is becoming obsolete. Speeds are significantly lower and highly dependent on the distance to the nearest street cabinet. Most consumers are moved to mobile broadband if fiber or coax is unavailable.

Mobile Broadband and 5G

Because Telmore’s roots are in mobile telephony, they are a significant provider of mobile internet in Denmark. This is distinct from a mobile phone plan. It involves a dedicated SIM card inserted into a 4G or 5G router.

Mobile broadband is an excellent solution for expats who move frequently or are in temporary housing. There is no technician visit required. You receive the router by mail, insert the SIM card, and plug it into a power outlet. Telmore utilizes the TDC NET 5G network, which has nationwide coverage. In urban centers, 5G speeds can rival fiber connections. However, latency (ping) is higher on mobile networks compared to fiber, which may affect real-time gaming or highly sensitive remote desktop applications.

Speeds and Pricing

The cost of internet in Denmark is generally competitive, but Telmore sits in the mid-to-high price range due to their brand positioning and bundled services. The following table outlines typical specifications you can expect.

Connection TypeDownload SpeedUpload SpeedLatency (Ping)Est. Price (DKK/month)Setup Time
Fiber (FTTH)200 – 1000 Mbps200 – 1000 MbpsLow (1-5 ms)249 – 349 DKK2-4 weeks
Cable (Coax)300 – 1000 Mbps60 – 100 MbpsMedium (10-20 ms)229 – 299 DKK1-2 weeks
Mobile (5G)50 – 900 Mbps*10 – 100 MbpsVariable (20-40 ms)199 – 299 DKK2-4 days
DSL (Copper)10 – 50 Mbps2 – 10 MbpsMedium (20-40 ms)200 – 250 DKK2-3 weeks

*Mobile speeds vary heavily based on distance to the mast and building insulation.

Prices listed above are for the internet connection alone. Telmore frequently runs promotions where the first few months are discounted. However, the standard monthly price applies after the introductory period. It is important to check if the router rental is included in the monthly fee. In many Telmore plans, a high-quality router is provided on loan, but it must be returned if you cancel the subscription.

Setup fees (Oprettelse) are common in Denmark. This is a one-time administrative fee charged on your first bill. Sometimes this fee is waived during campaigns. If a technician visit is required to activate a new line, this cost is usually covered by the provider, but missed appointments will result in a heavy fine charged to the customer.

Telmore

The Telmore Play Concept

Telmore’s defining feature is “Telmore Play.” This is a bundling strategy that combines mobile or internet subscriptions with access to streaming services. Services often included in these bundles are Netflix, Viaplay, TV2 Play, HBO Max, and Disney+.

For an expat, this can offer significant value. Subscribing to these services individually in Denmark is expensive. For example, a standard Netflix subscription and a TV2 Play subscription purchased separately can cost over 250 DKK per month. By bundling them with your internet through Telmore, the total package price is often lower than the sum of the individual parts. These subscriptions are fully integrated, meaning you manage them through your Telmore login.

It is worth noting that the content libraries for these services will be the Danish versions. While Netflix and Disney+ offer vast amounts of English-language content, local services like TV2 Play are predominantly Danish, though they do carry sports rights that may be of interest.

Hardware and Installation Process

When you order fixed broadband from Telmore, they will ship a router to your registered address. This hardware is typically a “loaner” device. It remains the property of Telmore.

The Router

Telmore supplies modern routers that support Wi-Fi 6 standards. These devices are pre-configured. You do not need to input technical settings like PPPoE credentials. It is generally a plug-and-play experience. If you live in a large house or a concrete apartment where Wi-Fi signals struggle, Telmore offers mesh Wi-Fi systems (often branded as “Smart Wi-Fi”) for an additional monthly fee. These satellite units extend coverage to dead zones.

Technician Visits

If your apartment has had internet previously, you likely will not need a technician. You will simply connect the router to the wall socket on the activation date. However, if you are the first person to activate fiber in a newly built apartment, or if the line has been physically disconnected, a technician from TDC NET will be dispatched.

You must be home during the technician’s window. These windows are often broad (e.g., 8:00 to 12:00). The technician will install the necessary socket or fiber box. They check the signal strength but generally do not help you connect your personal devices (laptops, phones) to the Wi-Fi.

Contract Terms and Consumer Rights

Danish telecommunications law provides strong consumer protection, which applies equally to foreigners.

Binding Period (Bindingsperiode)

The maximum binding period for any consumer contract in Denmark is six months. Telmore contracts almost always include this six-month lock-in. If you cancel before the six months are up, you may be required to pay out the remainder of the contract. This is a critical consideration if you are in Denmark on a short-term assignment of less than half a year.

Notice Period (Opsigelse)

After the binding period expires, or if you are cancelling within the binding period to leave at the six-month mark, the standard notice period is 30 days. You must give notice to Telmore one month in advance. You will be billed for this final month.

Right of Withdrawal (Fortrydelsesret)

When purchasing online, you have a 14-day right of withdrawal. This starts from the day you receive the order confirmation or the hardware. If you regret the purchase within two weeks, you can cancel without penalty, though you must return any equipment immediately.

Customer Service and Language Support

The official language of Telmore’s website, self-service portal, and emails is Danish. They do not offer a fully translated English version of their interface. This can be a hurdle for non-Danish speakers during the initial sign-up process. Using a browser with automatic translation is highly recommended.

However, telephone support is different. Most Danes speak excellent English. If you call Telmore’s customer service, the agents will almost certainly be able to assist you in English. They can guide you through technical troubleshooting, billing questions, or changing your subscription. The initial automated phone menu will be in Danish, so you may need to press keys blindly or ask a Danish colleague to help you navigate to a human agent.

Comparison with Other Providers

Telmore operates in a crowded market. Since they use the TDC network, the technical quality of the connection is comparable to other internet providers in Denmark that use the same lines.

Telmore vs. YouSee

YouSee is the “big brother” in the Nuuday family. YouSee internet is the standard market leader. The main difference lies in the bundling. YouSee focuses heavily on traditional cable TV packages and mixed bundles. Telmore focuses on digital streaming apps. If you prefer traditional flow TV channels, YouSee is the closer fit. If you prefer apps like Netflix, Telmore is structured for you.

Telmore vs. Hiper

Hiper internet positions itself as a “no-nonsense” provider. They focus purely on speed and low prices, stripping away extra services like music, books, or streaming bundles. Hiper is often cheaper than Telmore for the raw connection. If you do not need the entertainment packages included in Telmore Play, Hiper is frequently the more cost-effective choice for the exact same fiber or coax line.

Moving Address

If you move to a new address within Denmark, you can usually transfer your Telmore internet subscription. You must notify them of the move via their self-service portal at least 3-4 weeks in advance. This allows them to book a technician or activate the line at the new address.

If Telmore cannot supply internet at your new address (for example, if the new building uses a private fiber network Telmore cannot access), you have the right to terminate your contract without being held to the remaining binding period. You will need to provide proof of the move to the new address to trigger this clause.

Troubleshooting and Reliability

Reliability on the TDC NET infrastructure is generally high. Downtime is rare. However, if your internet drops, the first step is always to restart the router. If the issue persists, you should check the “Driftsstatus” (Operational Status) page on the Telmore website. By entering your address, you can see if there is a known outage in your area.

If there is no known outage, you must contact support. If the fault lies with the external cables or the street cabinet, the repair is free. If the fault is caused by your own equipment or damage you caused to the cables inside your apartment, you may be charged for the technician’s time.
